RATINGS NEWS—Castle was pre-empted in one market on Oct. 20 that accounted for about one percent of the potential viewing audience. Even with that factored, the episode still would have brought in at most a 1.6, which would have matched the series low. Instead, Castle came in third for the night with a 1.5 with 8.82 million viewers.

Is this anything to be concerned about? No. At least not in the short time. This is one episode and the season is still young. To talk about the series being canceled because of one episode is well, just silly.

The Live + 7 data was released with the corrected ratings for “Driven.”  The seventh season opener dropped a tenth of a point from 2.2 to 2.1 and slide down to 10.49 million viewers. The Live + 7 bump was eight tenths to 3.0 with 14.58 million viewers. That’s down 12 percent and eight percent over last year’s premiere which was 3.4 with 15.92 million viewers. It’s about a 370,000 viewer difference.

The show is at a critical point, where networks with expiring contracts on actors begin to look those issues as well their balance sheets. Having a healthy syndication deal and additional revenue may help but it may not be enough at the end of the day. Networks will begin to weigh the cost of production versus the revenue.

Nor should anything be read into the network adding another episode equating more seasons, etc. Networks do this. Just like they reduce orders, they add orders as well. For a show like Castle which had a full season order, it doesn’t mean anything since it runs from September till May. It just means one less week of either a repeat or no episode.
