The case of the week
This week’s victim, Grigory Mishkin, is looking into his mother’s death. To accomplish that, he seeks the help of his Diplobrat friends (offspring of foreign diplomats). They set their eyes in Jurgen Kass who provided Grigory with useful information on how to hack into a Cherokee… spycraft… wouldn’t be a Castle episode without it.
Along for the ride in this investigation is Russian security agent, later outed as an intelligence cleaner, Vasiliy Zhirov. He’s a big fan of Richard Castle and Katherine “The Great.” Doesn’t go without saying, he’s disappointed when he learns they’re no working together. Vasiliy pulls some strings and they’re working together again.
Grigory’s investigation leads him to a bed-and-breakfast where he learns his mother was having a secret affair. He uses a friend who works for a company that stores government data in the “cloud” to find out who his mother was seeing.
Anya, the victim’s mother, was a sleeper Soviet spy seeing another sleeper agent, Anatoly Arkady who was flipped by the U.S. to be a double agent. But Beckett and the team have their suspicions about Vasiliy, that’s confirmed by an impromptu visit by Rita.
Castle’s step-mom pumps Vasiliy for information, he fesses up Anya was looking into a leak at the Russian consulate. That of course, leads to Beckett fessing to Castle who Rita really is and that course leads to the writer thinking the lies getting old. Really old, so old in fact it leads Beckett to realize a sniper rifle and a Cold War weapons cache.
Anya is still alive and was trying to save her son’s life. Sergei, Grigory’s adoptive father, is the traitor in the consulate. Thinking their killer is going to escape because of diplomatic immunity, Vasiliy has a few tricks up his sleeve, which includes sending Sergei to the coldest place Russia has, there are places far worse than prison, it seems.
A few things more…
There’s not much more to elaborate on with “Dead Red.” Beckett’s ploy to convince the world she and Castle have separated seemingly worked. Beckett’s guardian angel apparently is hanging around in New York and keeping a watchful eye, noted she was convinced the couple had split up. Rita comforts Castle about Beckett’s reasons, though it still stings.
Castle’s attempt at finding a baby gift for Ryan doesn’t impress Martha and Alexis who find Baby Kevlar and a baby size lightsaber not appropriate. They of course have him covered with suitable gifts for Ryan’s baby boy.
